Download our pregnancy factsheet and find out more about babies who position themselves in breech near their due date.
Breech presentation occurs a baby is lying bottom first or feet first in the uterus (womb) rather than the usual head first position.
While breech position is common in the early stages of pregnancy, most babies turn to be head first as the pregnancy nears an end, in preparation for childbirth. Only about three babies in every hundred babies remain in the breech position.
With diagrams of the various breech positions, the fact sheet discusses what causes a breech presentation of a baby in the womb, and the risks associated with a breech baby.
