This is a common bacteria that adults have, and about 20% of healthy woman have in their vagina at the time of giving birth. While it common, this bacteria can create an infection risk if passed to a newborn baby during childbirth. 1 in 200 women with GBS will have a baby that develops a severe infection, requiring the baby have a hospital admission and intravenous antibiotics in the first days of life.
